Weekly Digest 10/28

Welcome to another great week! We hope you are having a fun and safe "spooky season!" Let's get into a few reminders and event rundowns:

Reminder: Booking Coaching Sessions

While you are still welcome to book coaching sessions using Prentus, you can also find our booking calendars on the Resource Hub. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you'll see Taryn's and my bookable calendars.

This Week's Events

In addition to office hours, we are launching a few new events this week. Check out the details below and access the Zoom links on the Career Services Calendar.

TODAY 5:00 pm EST: Pitch Practice

  • Bring your pitch (AKA introduction) and come ready to workshop it!

The pitch is one of the most commonly used parts of your narrative. It's the answer to the "tell me about yourself" interview question. It is your introduction during networking events (online or in person). It is how you begin informational interviews. And it is how you brand yourself in order to stand out. There is no understating it's importance!

That being said, it's common to feel shaky and uncertain about how to communicate this vital information. So, let's practice together in a safe, nonjudgmental environment. Bring the current version of your pitch and plan to share it with the group. You will receive positive as well as constructive feedback, and you will be asked to provide the same to your peers.
Tomorrow 10/29, 6:00 pm ET: Guest Speaker Panel w/ Chris Weathers & Kevin Bradley
  • Join us tomorrow for a discussion with our very own Chris Weathers and Kevin Bradley. Chris is a lifelong technologist and current TA with our Data Analytics program! Kevin is a Data Analytics Engineer at PetSafe Brands and an instructor with the Data Analytics program. These two are both awesome and have tons of relevant experience to share with folks in all programs. Be sure to submit questions prior to the panel using this Slido link

Wednesday 10/30, 4:30 pm ET: Bookable 1:1 Interview Prep Slots

  • Book a 15-minute appointment to do rapid-fire interview prep! This is a great opportunity to review your prep strategy, practice answering interview questions, or brainstorm questions to ask your interviewers.

Thursday 10/31, 4:30 pm ET: Sourcing Jobs Beyond LinkedIn & Indeed

  • LinkedIn and Indeed are large, well-known job boards. They're a great resource to use, but they're not the only sites to look at when sourcing (finding) jobs. During this workshop, we will explore new resource and discuss how to use new job boards. This workshop is for you if you feel stuck in a rut when it comes to finding online applications to submit.

Learner & Alumni Resource Hub

Upright Learner & Alumni Resource Hub: This is a centralized space where you'll find Learner and Career Services Help Centers, Upright contact information, links to Prentus and your curriculum, career services booking calendars, and more. Within the Career Services Help Center, you will find job search best practices, job search material recommendations and resources, information on how to make this experience work for you, and more.

This is your "one-stop-shop!"

If you have any questions or need guidance on navigating the hub, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help!

Reminder: Prentus Job Board

Some of you may know that Prentus has a built-in job board, but did you know that it scrapes jobs across 100+ sources, including LinkedIn & Indeed, every single day? This is a major win not only because it pulls together jobs from multiple sources, but it also specifically targets junior positions (0-3 years of experience) that have been posted within the last 72 hours AND it removes jobs that have been posted for 30 days. If you aren't already monitoring this job board, now is the time to start!

To see all of the jobs, be sure to unselect "my community only" and "employer partners only." You should always cast a wide net! Check out the screenshot below to see the filtering options.

Action Required: Updating Profile Display Names

To make communication smoother and ensure we can easily recognize everyone in our community, please update your Discord user profile display name to your first and last names. If you’re concerned about anonymity on other servers, you can simply update your “server nickname” within the Upright Server instead. This will help us all stay connected and ensure no one gets lost in the mix! If you're struggling to make this update, I recorded a brief tutorial here

Resume Template Reminder

Have a great week, and remember, we're just an email or Discord message away if you need any help or support.
