What to Do If You’re Getting “Ghosted” During Your Job Search

You’ve submitted applications, sent follow-up emails, maybe even interviewed and then… nothing. Ghosting happens to even the strongest candidates, but it doesn’t mean you’re not qualified or that your job search has failed. It’s often about timing,

1. Understand Why Ghosting Happens

Employers may go silent for reasons outside your control:

  • Hiring freeze or budget delay

  • Role filled internally

  • Long decision process or miscommunication

  • Application system issues (ATS errors, missing contact info)

Don’t take it personally — instead, refocus your strategy.

2. Strengthen Your Follow-Up Game

If it’s been 7–10 days since your application or last contact:
Send a brief, professional email or LinkedIn message:

“Hi [Name], I hope your week is going well! I wanted to follow up on my application for [Position]. I remain very interested in contributing my [specific skill or experience] to [Company]. Please let me know if there’s any update or additional information I can provide.”

Keep it short, confident, and focused on value.

3. Re-Evaluate Your Outreach

If ghosting is consistent, review:

  • Resume keywords (are you ATS-optimized?)

  • LinkedIn activity (are you visible and engaging?)

  • Cover letters (are they personalized or generic?)

  • Networking (are you connecting with recruiters or alumni first?)

Book a session with your Career Coach for a quick “ghosting audit” to identify what’s missing.

4. Keep Momentum Going

While waiting, continue applying and networking. Think of each application as a seed — not every one grows, but with consistency, results come faster.
