What to include in a capstone demo video

This reading will outline what to include and why it can be helpful to create demo videos that highlight your capstone or personal projects

Goal

Video walk-throughs are a great way to introduce yourself to prospective employers or teammates through asynchronous channels. Once this video is recorded and reviewed by a coach, you should post it on your LinkedIn and portfolio sites. These quickly show that you’re a person that anyone would like to work with (or have at their company). Not only can folks get a sense of who you are, but it also allows you to demonstrate communication skills and technical aptitude.

Video Outline

Your video recording should be no more than 3 minutes long and it should include the following sections:

  1. Introduction (<1 minute)
    • Name & Location
    • Background
      • Education
      • Work
  2. Project / Capstone Demo - Demo one project at a time (Share screen: 1-2 minutes)
    • Introduce the Capstone - Name & Brief Description
    • Technologies Used
    • Capstone, Walk-Through
      • Talk about what you did
      • Talk about how you did it
      • Talk about the technologies you used
      • Talk about Challenges you faced or something that you learned
        1. What was the challenge, how did you tackle challenge, what was end result?
        2. Or what did you learn, why did you learn it, how will you use this new skill in the future?
  3. Wrap-Up (<1 minute)
    • “Thank you for viewing my demo!”
    • Include Contact Info Slide - Use powerpoint/google slides to make this slide
      • Email
      • Phone
      • LinkedIn

Video Walk-Through Best Practices

  • Be upbeat!
  • Smile!
  • Eye contact/look at the camera
  • Dress professionally (collared shirt/blouse/sweater)
  • Record in a well-lit, quiet room
  • Script - Write out a script so that you have a good idea on what you’d like to say while filming the video
  • The “flow” should be logical, consider how a user might interact with your site and plan your walkthrough accordingly

Recommended Recording Platforms

  1. Loom: The free account allows for up to 5 minutes of recording which is plenty of time and Loom makes it easy to share the link.
  2. Zoom: After creating your Zoom meeting, click “record” and select “record to the cloud.” After you finish recording, you will get a link to the recording in your email. This link is easy to share and simpler than having to convert the download from your computer.
